Asking questions, at a time when it is appropriate, is so very important. Identifying the hurt behind the actions is imperative if we are going to help our child through the pain triggered by RSD. It is understandable to want to facilitate our child’s relationships with others. Often this requires us to foster understanding on both sides of the equation.

Difficulty Making Connections

And it is true that having ADHD does appear to raise your risk of RSD significantly. It is not entirely clear why this is, but one potential explanation is that the central nervous system tends to be triggered in different ways in those with ADHD. Moreover, someone with RSD may not be as anxious before an interaction but instead will have an outsized and extreme reaction afterward if they felt it went badly. Verywell Health uses only high-quality sources, including peer-reviewed studies, to support the facts within our articles.

Adults with rejection sensitivity who are in romantic relationships will likely experience ongoing relationship problems. They often misinterpret events and reactions because they’re hyper-vigilant about being rejected. Sometimes what we think is rejection sensitivity is actually trauma.

MAOIs were found to be as effective for ADHD as methylphenidate in one head-to-head trial conducted in the 1960s. They also produce very few side effects with true once-a-day dosing, are not a controlled substance , come in inexpensive, high-quality generic versions, and are FDA-approved for both mood and anxiety disorders. If there is the slightest possibility that a person might try something new and fail or fall short in front of anyone else, it becomes too painful or too risky to make the effort. These bright, capable people avoid any activities that are anxiety-provoking and end up giving up things like dating, applying for jobs, or speaking up in public . However, diagnosis and treatment — especially earlier in life — make it possible for people to adapt and manage it. Eventually, people with RSD may overcome the effects or at least learn how to limit its impacts on their lives.

Although RSD can impact any individual, RSD cases seem to be more common in people with ADHD. The nervous system in many people with ADHD immediately responds to a sense of rejection, whether real or perceived. Verywell Health’s content is for informational and educational purposes only.

How to Manage Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria

When your RSD is triggered, you can convince yourself that someone you care about actually doesn’t care about you at all. When we react out of being triggered by RSD, we don’t always make the right decision. I have accused people of trying to hurt me when they weren’t.

Whether or not the rejection has actually occurred or is strongly perceived, RSD makes it difficult to recover from criticism. Many people with ADHD look at social situations through the filter of past experiences of rejection and exclusion, which further fuels rejection sensitivity. For a while, I actually thought datingrated I had borderline personality disorder (a common misdiagnosis in women who actually have ADHD), but I didn’t relate to other parts of it — just the rejection part. Once I found out what rejection sensitive dysphoria was, I realized that my reaction, in hindsight, wasn’t stupid and actually made a lot of sense.

They internalize every small incident as proof that they are not worthy or love or friendship. Being neglected, or forced to live up to impossible ideals of perfection, or being made to feel guilty and ashamed at a young age can all contribute to RSD. Having a highly critical parent or adult figure that squashed your self-esteem can make you ultra-sensitive to criticism. Or being abandoned by a loved one can create a lifelong fear of rejection.

Because many ADHD children and adults may already experience a feeling of otherness, they often already feel like they are at a disadvantage. Rejection sensitive dysphoria and dating doesn’t get talked about often, although it should. What speaks more to the power of rejection than heartbreak? What can leave us crying and confused more easily than a lover who leaves us for good?
